This beautiful box is made from 833 grade silver (silver of 83.3% purity). It has a serpentine outline and is decorated with Engine-Turned stipes around the body, a band of diamonds and beads to the top and bottom and a chequered pattern to the top of the hinged lid with a gadrooned surround. To the front is a vacant shield cartouche.
The base has the Lion Passant mark with the number 2 beneath which denotes that the silver is a minimum of 833 grade. To the edge of the lid it has the date letter Y for 1858 and a makers mark which I havent been able to identify. These boxes were designed to hold peppermints but they could also be used for trinkets.
This box is in good condition and the decorative detail is nice and crisp. However, after 162 years, there are a few things to bring to your attention.
To the front there are 2 small, light bruises, one to the right-hand side, 2 to the back and 1 to the left-hand side. The top of the lid has a 2cm long line bruise so is slightly indented. To the top, back right-hand corner, there is what looks like a 5mm split although its not visible from the inside and appears to be the line of the seam showing through. The hinge is in good order and the lid closes nice and securely.PLEASE SCROLL DOWN PAGE TO SEE MORE IMAGES Approximate Measurements.
