833 Silver Box by Jacob Kooiman C1887 Schoohhoven 25.07g. Fine and decorative antique hunting scene. 833 Dutch silver box, dating from 1887. The maker was Jacob Kooiman and the piece was made in Schoonhoven for export, as it is stamped with the key stamp. The panels on the box depict outdoor hunting scenes with various themes, including a hunter with a dog, on two panels, a horse and stag and a horse, cow and sheep on the other two panels. Each panel is embossed to varying degrees and texture to recreate foliage and trees. The lid has two ladies carrying a large bunch of grapes and surrounded by a garland with flowers, perhaps this was a reward for the hunters, the grapes signifying wine after a hard day of work in the forrest. Inside the lid is a hinged grille with cutout crosses which suggests the possible use of this box was as a pomander. The box is in good condition for its age though the lid fastening is little tight. The box is marked with Jacob Kooiman's makers mark JK and a lion rampant number 2 and a key as well as a face with a key which dates the piece to c1887 and shows in was made for export.
