George III Dutch silver pocket corkscrew c1820 Date : Marked with Dutch'Sword' silver marks Period : George III Origin : Netherlands Decoration : Engine turned barrel and handle Size : Length 8.2 cm, Handle 4.8cm Condition : Handle slightly loose. Restoration : None Weight : 18.4 grams gross.
Originally designed with the travelling gentleman in mind, silver pocket corkscrews are now much in demand by collectors of wine antiques. This Dutch example is relatively plain and elegant with an engine turned finish to the handle and sheath cover. The steel worm is of full length and although the handle is slightly loose this corkscrew will still do the job. Please note that what looks like dents on the handle and sheath are actually Dutch'sword' silver marks.
There is also a very worn maker's mark on the sheathe but this is no longer legible. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971.
My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976. Some five years later I became head of the Decorative Arts department.
