Please scroll down for photographs below. A very charming antique silver sugar castor of vase shape with classical roundels, swags, face mounts and a pineapple finial.
Very heavy quality sits well in the hand. The top is not detachable, the sugar is filled from underneath and would originally have had a cork (supplied). Weight 181 grams, 5.8 troy ounces.
Marked underneath with the Dutch dolphin duty mark. Literature: The Dutch Dolphin mark. The 1859 duty mark for new unguaranteed objects of national origin.
This mark was used on all new silver objects below legal standard of fineness, those with non-precious metal additions, and on new heavily gold or silver plated objects, as long as the average precious metal content after melting with the base metal was at least 250/1000. It was also struck on rejected objects which had been submitted at lowest standard of fineness. In that case the maker had to choose between destruction or unguaranteed marking. This mark was sometimes also mistakenly used on old and foreign objects. Condition: This lovely caster is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration.
The bottom is a bit not round. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age.
