This is a most extraordinary museum quality Dutch buckle from circa L. 19th century in style of French Renaissance 16th/17th Period in a Baroque ensemble of classical design elements including shell backed Moor's heads at corners, urns, Ram's heads and leafy wreaths and scroll work throughout. The mechanisms which turn on their rod hinge are tight and expertly designed. The entire buckle has an approx. 30 degree curvature to fight well against the wearer's contours and must have been quite impressive as a show of their wealth and status. Two consisting of letters and one that appears to be a helmeted man's head in side profile although the image is not very sharp as it were.
5-3/4" L x 2-5/8" W x 3/4 H at center. Antique condition as in photos.
