Antique 18th Century Dutch Amsterdam Sterling Silver Peppermint Snuff Box
Antique 18th century Dutch sterling silver peppermint or snuff box from Amsterdam. Box features scenes of every day rural life: a man with a basket of vegetables, a woman picking flowers, a man drinking, and a woman with baskets. The lid depicts a young shepherd wooing a young woman with flowers. Hallmarks: Piece is stamped along the base as follows, "CH" adjacent to the three Andreas crosses (Crown, XXX, F) , which is the city guild mark for Amsterdam. The date letter "F" is approximately from the mid 1700s. Box is also marked along the rim under the lid with an axe or hatchet stamp. Dimensions: Height 1 1/4" x Width 1 1/8" x Depth 1. Condition: Good antique condition with light wear and tarnish. Small crack to reverse near left side of hinge. Hinge is missing the original pin, and it appears to have been replaced with a brass pin. Both flaws can easily be repaired by a jeweler. Piece was recently acquired from a local estate in Piedmont, CA. We will be listing additional pieces from the same estate soon, including silver snuff boxes, peppermint boxes, nutmeg grinders, vinaigrettes, vesta cases, and enameled bilston boxes.
